Why do I need to register?

To help safeguard all confidential client information, we require you to register and login to enter the MyLegalAffairs™ safe and secure client portal. You can register and start the questionnaire without making payment. If you are not accepted into the Online Divorce Mediation Program, you still get to keep your Marital Separation Agreement that you create.  You can refer to it as you continue your negotiations with your spouse.

Why do I have to complete an online questionnaire and create a Marital Separation Agreement?

The outcome of a successful mediation is an agreed upon Marital Separation Agreement that both parties execute (sign). Once this is done, your divorce becomes an uncontested divorce, and you can represent yourself without incurring significant legal fees.

We ask you to complete an online questionnaire which creates a “first draft” of a Marital Separation Agreement for three reasons:

  • The process of completing the Questionnaire helps you to clarify your thinking about what issues need to be resolved with your spouse;
  • The mediator can analyze the output of the Questionnaires (which is is totally confidential) and determine whether this online mediation process can work for you and your spouse and whether you are eligible for this Program;
  • If you find that you are not comfortable with the Online Questionnaire process, or find it difficult to navigate, this will be an immediate signal to you to use traditional in-person mediation, or be represented by counsel.

Do you provide legal advice?

We are not a law firm. We only provide divorce mediation services. Divorce mediators do not provide legal advice. Instead they help you resolve the issues between you and your spouse by providing general guidance and using dispute settlement techniques. To make sure that you understand the general rules that apply to divorce, child support, child custody and other subjects where you may have a conflict, the mediator will often direct you to the general legal rules that could be applied to  your specific situation. This Web site also contains detailed legal information for the State of Maryland.

In what states is this Online Mediation Service presently offered?

  • One spouse must be a resident of the State of Maryland. The Service is presently offered only in the State of Maryland.

Will I get a copy of the Marital Separation Agreement that I created from the online Questionnaire?

Yes.  A copy of your Marital Separation Agreement will be available in your MyLegalAffairs secure space so that you can reference it during the mediation. If you decide not to go forward with the mediation, you will still be able to access this Agreement for future reference. There is no charge for this service.

When do I pay for the mediation service?

You pay for the service after you have and your spouse have been notified that you have been accepted for this Online Mediation Program. Each spouse pays $375, one-half of the total cost. We can arrange for one party to pay for the total cost of $750.

How quickly can I get divorced after the Mediation is concluded?

If the mediation is concluded successfully and the parties enter into a Marital Separation Agreement, you can file for a no-fault divorce after the required period of separation is completed. This period of separation varies from state to state and can be as long as a year.  For example, in the State of Maryland you and your spouse must be separated and live apart for a 12-month period before you can file your divorce papers.  You are required to file for divorce in the State where you or spouse is a legal resident.

What is included in the divorce forms package filed with the court?

Step-by-Step Instructions:  State-specific, step-by-step instructions, including instructions on how to conduct yourself in a hearing. These smart legal forms are designed for uncontested cases, so hearings are usually brief and informal.

Forms:  All the forms you will need to file your own divorce or change your name; establish a guardianship or pursue one of the post-divorce actions such as collection of child support or modification of custody.

What if I forgot my password?

Not a problem. Click the “Forgot Username or Password?” link at the top-right corner of the MyLegalAffairs™ client portal login page or the home page, and we will email the username and password to the e-mail you used when you registered.

How do I change my password?

Log into your MyLegalAffairs™ safe and secure client portal and click on “My Account” in the top menu bar.  Verify all of your contact information is correct. Under the “Update” button you will see a blue “Click here” to change your password link, then you will be prompted to enter your old password and new password to change it.

How do I complete my forms online?

There is an easy to follow 3-Step Process.

  • Register to create your free Marital Separation Agreement.  Each spouse needs to register separately.
  • Complete the online questionnaire.  You can start it, save your answers, and come back later if you need to.
  • Purchase the online divorce mediation service when you are ready, which you will find under the Divorce Mediation tab.

How are legal documents created?

Your documents are created with the help of our proprietary, intelligent document automation technology, which asks you a series of easy-to-answer questions that tailor themselves to your circumstances. Each question is accompanied with explanatory notes designed to provide you with the information needed to answer the question correctly. The document you create is also state specific. This means that it complies with the law of your state.

The information you enter will be stored securely online, allowing you to access and complete the questionnaire at any time. Once your document is created, a divorce mediator undertakes further review and analysis and comparse it to your spouse’s Marital Separation Agreement to identify areas of agreement and conflict. This analysis will determine whether you will be accepted into this Online Divorce Mediation Program.

Which Web browser do I need?

The minimum browser requirements for creating documents on the Web site are Internet Explorer version 6.0 and above, Firefox version 3.0 and above, Chrome, or Safari. You can create documents and legal forms on a Windows or an Apple computer, including an iPad.

I don’t understand what a question means or is referring to.

Most questions are accompanied by explanatory notes designed to provide you with the information needed to answer the question correctly. A small “?” (question mark) icon by any question indicates that there is explanatory text to help you answer a question. Click on the “?” to see the help text; click on the “?” again to close the help text pop-up box.

I have a red asterisk next to a question group after completing my document. What does this mean?

If you have a red asterisk next to a question group, this shows that you have missed answering a question. Double click on the question group to view and complete any unanswered questions. Questions specifically listed as “optional” or that have help text indicating the question may be skipped or left blank, can remain unanswered. Otherwise, complete required questions to ensure the accuracy of your document.

How do I print my document?

When you log into your MyLegalAffairs™ account, you will see a list of completed documents under the Document tab. Click on the document name, and you can print a copy. You can also export the document to your desktop in Microsoft Word or Adobe .PDF and print the document from your printer.

My account: Contains the personal details you entered when you registered with the Divorce Mediation Resource Center. From this section of the site you are able to view and/or amend any of these details.

My services: Contains an overview of services you have access to.

Summary: An overview of document templates (you have accessed) and documents in progress.

My Questionnaires:  Here you can start to create new legal documents based on the services you have selected.
